7.5 Action If Fire Alarm Sounds In Newton Park Buildings
Information For Area Safety Managers / Security In Case Of Fire
The Security Guard in the Security Lodge is alerted to the activation of the fire alarm via a phone call from the monitoring station. The Fire Panel is then checked to ascertain the location of the Fire.
A Security Guard then goes to that location Assembly Point to liaise with the Fire Warden /Area Safety Manager to establish if there is a definite fire and if so compile a "Situation Report". if the Fire Service are required, Security will contact them directly. Any location on site is accessible within two minutes.
In the absence of the designated fire warden, the residential tutor, security staff will assume the role of fire warden. Fire
Wardens have been issued with a whistle in order to improve communications
during fire evacuations. The use of a whistle will assist those unfamiliar
the location of the Fire Assembly points i.e. contractors, visitors and new
students.
On arrival at the Fire Assembly Point a Fire Warden will sound three sharp
blasts on the whistle to gain the attention of those evacuating the
building. Those exiting the building should safely make their way to the
Fire Warden at the Assembly Point, and await further instructions. At this
stage any useful information can be passed onto the Fire Warden.
When it is safe to re enter the building a Fire Warden will sound one single
extended blast on the whistle - this is the signal that it is safe to renter
the building. You should not re enter the buildings until you have been
given the signal to do so. In the event of a real fire, this signal will
come from the Senior Fire Officer in attendance.
This Should State:
- The precise location of the fire
- Any particular hazards to be aware of eg oxygen cylinder
- If are there any people who are still likely to be within the confines of the building, including any who are trapped or incapacitated in any way.
On arrival of the Fire Service on site, the Security Lodge Guard will hand over the Fire Risk Assessment and direct them to the building indicated on the panel, where they will liaise with the Fire Warden/ASM/Security Guard at that location.
The Senior Fire Officer will receive the "Situation Report" from the staff at the location and act accordingly.
Security will at all times assist the Warden to keep the personnel at the Assembly Point and out of the way of Fire crews.
The Senior Fire Officer and ONLY him will proclaim the buildings safe and will declare the "All clear". At this point and not before all occupants can be allowed back inside.
Fire fighting should only be undertaken by those competent and trained to do so.
