The Surrounding Area
Although Bath has plenty to offer, it would be a mistake to ignore the wonderful surrounding area. Bristol is only 15 minutes away by train, if you want to explore a large maritime city, and you can reach central London in 90 minutes.
For a quieter retreat, Bath is surrounded by beautiful countryside in an 'Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty'. It has easy access to walking and cycling trails, with the Cotswolds to the north and the Mendips to the south.
A trip on the River Avon or the Kennet and Avon Canal - whether on a pleasure boat trip or in a hired boat - is a good way of seeing parts of the countryside you might otherwise miss. Within an hour's drive of Bath is a host of attractions such as Cheddar Caves, Wookey Hole, Longleat, Stonehenge and Glastonbury Abbey.
