Information for external users

Reference facilities

During opening times, members of the public may use the libraries for reference purposes to consult books, CDs and DVDs. You should fill in an application form on your first visit. Once registered as a reference user, you may also use the photocopying facilities and the enquiry service. It is best to phone or consult the Library website before a visit to ensure that we are open, particularly during University vacations.

Borrowing facilities

If you wish to borrow books, you should compete the application form to register as an external member.  There is a fee for this facility.  External members are entitled to borrow up to 5 items at a time, to place holds and use the enquiry services but not the interlibrary loan service.  Due to licence restrictions, external members may not use the networked computers or access the electronic resources.

Alumni membership

If you are a graduate of the University, then a reduced rate applies and there is a separate application form to complete. Unfortunately due to licence restrictions, alumni will also not be able to use the networked computers or access the electronic resources.

Completed application forms should be sent to:

Information for teachers at local schools

The Library accepts supervised visits from groups of 6th form students at pre-arranged quiet times, usually during University vacations, subject to staff availability. A teacher must accompany the group throughout the visit.

Students will have access to printed books and journals available on the open shelves, and the use of library catalogue. Self-service photocopiers are available. Before arranging a visit, please check the library catalogue in advance to ensure we cover subjects relevant to your students at the site library you plan to visit.

Please apply a few weeks in advance to allow for the necessary arrangements to be made. To arrange a visit or to request further information please email Dr Sally Griffin, Widening Participation and Access Manager at

We regret we are unable to grant reference use of the library to individual sixth form students outside of these organised visits.
